August: Breastfeeding Awareness Through Herbs

At Garden Root Remedy, we always keep the mamas in mind when it comes to self-care and care for their little ones. Did you know that we carry a line of herbal baby products as well as products for mothers in different stages of life? We sure do - Read on for more information!

In light of #national #breastfeeding #awareness #month, I wanted to mention some benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby. Breast milk provides the ideal nutrients needed for proper growth and development.

  1. The best source of nutrition for most babies.

  2. Breastfeeding can help protect babies against some short and long-term illnesses and diseases. In studies breastfeed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It also reduces the risk of ear infections and stomach viruses for babies.

  3. Breast milk shares antibodies from the mother with her baby which help babies develop a strong immune system.

  4. Mothers can breastfeed their babies anytime anywhere without mixing or heating up formulas. Temperature regulated already through mama!

  5. Breastfeeding can also reduce the mothers risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for about 6 months, and continuing when introducing age appropriate foods until about 12 months or older. The Healthy Children organization also has excellent content available on their website.

This is the perfect time to tell you how positive my Mother’s Milk Tea has been for many new moms for increased milk production. In fact, I have one mom who is producing so much milk she donates to a mother’s milk bank!

There are several herbs that are available to increase milk production and I have captured those in my exclusive tea that can be consumed either hot or cold. Some of the herbs to give recognition to are:

  • Fenugreek which is native to the Mediterranean and Asia is a primary ingredient in many lactation teas.

  • Red Raspberry boosts milk production as well as if taken in the last couple weeks of pregnancy can help induce labor and improve post delivery recovery.

  • Nettle increases and enriches the flow of breast milk and restores the mother's energy following childbirth. It is rich in vitamins and minerals to restore health.

  • Milk thistle helps to increase milk production as well.

I can go on with other perfect herbs for improving milk production, but I also want to mention some herbs that can dry up the milk that new mom’s should be aware of, especially if you use herbs regularly for general wellness. Herbs that can dry up milk production include: barberry, cascara sagrada, ginseng, ginger, goldenseal, green tea, parsley, sage, and yerba mate. If you have a herbalist connection or midwife be sure to check in with them for correct education on contraindicated herbs.

Unfortunately, with breastfeeding comes sore nipples!! I have you covered there as well! My Ta Ta Salve helps manage and heal sore cracked nipples. The salve itself is non-toxic and safe for babies as well. I would encourage nursing mom’s to care for their precious nipples to ensure their babies nutrition is not compromised due to pain.

Our Mother's Milk Tea and Ta Ta Salve are available and on sale this month!
