Did You Know that Herbs are Vegetables too?

Updated: Jun 3

You never need to waste anything on a vegetable plant! Every part of a plant has a purpose. My goal is to help you recognize and understand that plants and herbs are powerful sources of energy and health within our lives. So let's talk about radish leaves and their benefits...

#Radish #leaves are packed with nutrients which may be a surprise to many people. The leaves have high magnesium, calcium, and iron which are great for the stomach and liver which aid to detoxify. They are responsible for reducing the destruction of red blood cells caused by a condition called jaundice. It is predicted that a ½ liter of radish leaves juice x 10 days can help cure jaundice. Radish leaves increase immunity and reduce fatigue symptoms. This is in part to the levels of phosphorus, vitamin C, vitamin A, and thiamine. The leaves with their nutrients aid in dissolving stones present in the urinary system. They may also be responsible for reducing blood glucose levels which can help prevent diabetes or reverse pre-diabetes.

The leaves contain more fiber than the radishes themselves which is excellent for increasing daily dietary fiber. On average a person should consume between 28-38 gm of fiber per day depending on biological sex and age. There is approximately 2.3 grams of fiber in 128 grams of radish leaves not to mention the multiple other packed nutrients in the leaves.

So you may be asking, why are radish leaves highlighted today?

Well for one, I am a #gardener and I hate to throw away any part of my #vegetables. Everything I grow has a purpose. Typically, when we buy radishes at the grocery store we cut the greens off and throw them away! Granted sometimes they do not look healthy or edible…that I understand. However, they are always so beautiful when purchased at the farmers markets or local farm stands.

You can put them in your salads, in sandwiches in place of lettuce, add them to your smoothies, or toss them fresh in your pasta with a little EVOO, garlic, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper! You add radish greens with any other steamed vegetable like broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, or rapini, etc.

Radishes are very easy to grow. You can sow them in the ground around your backyard trees, container pots, or any area available. They are harvested around 3-5 weeks after planting!

Take Care & Enjoy!
