Tea Time: Herbal Tea the Right Way

Updated: Jun 3

Did you know that simply seeping your tea in hot water for 4-5 minutes is NOT the effective way to absorb the medicinal qualities of herbal tea? Read on to find out how you can get the most our of your herbal tea time.

The method of "decoction" is the best way to consume #tea and benefit from the concentrated #medicinal value the #herbs can provide you. #Decoction is the act of boiling in water, in order to extract the peculiar properties or virtues.

Medicinal teas are the easiest form of herbal mediums. In hot liquid, the herbs are easily absorbed. They are the least concentrated, but if #steeped effectively you can increase the potency and provide the #therapeutic benefit needed to aid in your #health and wellness plan. A steeped cup of tea after 4-5 minutes will have therapeutic benefits, however, I do recommend a decoction to get the greatest benefit from the herbs. The decocting process can be done a couple of ways.

Add your herbs to a pot of cold water and bring to a boil, then simmer for 20-45 minutes and allow to cool. Strain the herbs out when ready to drink.

Another option would be bringing the pot of water to a boil with the herbs, then turning off heat and allowing it to cool overnight. Strain the herbs and put the decocted tea in a glass bottle or jar in the refrigerator.

Heat up when ready to drink!

Herbal Tea Tips:

  • 1 packed small tea basket to 3 cups of water for medicinal-strength tea.

  • Use distilled or purified water to make tea.

  • Use a tea pot that is either glass, ceramic, or earthenware. Do not use aluminum.

  • Electric tea kettle with tea infusion ability.

Drink medicinal teas in small sips throughout the day rather than drinking a cup all at once. This allows for better absorption of the tea rather than passing before it has had a chance to work.

Fair warning…Medicinal teas are bitter and can be unpleasant to drink. I try to add “extras” that help improve the overall taste. The extras I do recommend to add for flavor are mint, orange peel, lemon peel, honey, or other spices such as a cinnamon stick, clove, anise star, etc.

Overall, #herbal teas are an excellent way to add #alternative medicine to your health routine. Herbal teas have a purpose and can be crafted to help with any ailment or remedy you are seeking to help you on your journey of healing.
